CNA's don't give IM Injections!!!! CNA = Certified Nurses Assistant. IM
injection = Intramuscular injection. CNA's do not administer medications.
That is the job of the nurse. I was a CNA and an EMT before I became a
Nurse. A Nurse should be able to do the job of the person next to them and
below them. I can do the job of a CNA but a CNA can not do my job. The role
of the nurse is at scope above the scope of practice of the CNA. In
healthcare we all practice within our scope. We operate as an
interdisciplinary team (Nurses: LPN's, RN's, Doctors, Respiratory
Therapist, Physical Therapists and so on and so forth.) Medical/Surgical
nursing involves taking care of medical patients (Admitted for a medical
diagnosis i.e.Kidney failure) and surgical patients (i.e. patients right
after heart surgery) What you learn in Nursing school are the "basics" in
nursing. You learn theory and how a normal body works and then what can go
wrong in the human body(and much much more). In clinicals you put all of
the book work into practice. On the job it is a continuous learning curve.
You will learn from senior nurses and other members of the healthcare team.
Healthcare always changes and you never stop learning. Nursing involves a
ton of on the job training. We regularly have "in-services" which are
classes on the job that update us on knowledge of various aspects of
nursing (such as clinical skills, legal issues in nursing practice and so
on). We deal with patients (and their family members) who may be angry or
upset. When you deal with peoples lives its a touchy subject and emotions
run high. A patient may not be "angry" but, in pain and you're the nurse
with the medicine that stops the pain. They may yell at you. We can't take
it personal. A good nurse will try to anticipate the needs of the patient
to prevent situations like that. Some nursing schools require an entrance
exam called a TEAS Test. It is important to be a "critical thinker" as a
nurse. The NCLEX exam does have a particular way of asking questions
because they want you to be a critical thinker. Nursing school isn't easy
but, those who have had other jobs or roles in healthcare tend to do better
in school. Studying a lot is not the key, study smart! Connect the dots
with the information you get during lectures. Work with your learning
style. If you're a visual learner, go to the lab, watch videos, practice
hands on. If you're an auditory learner, read your lecture notes out loud
to yourself or use mnemonics. Find what works for you. Use your classroom
time wisely and pick the brains of your teachers and other nurses. Work
hard, study smart and remember that Nursing is an art and a science and we
do it for the patients!

Hello my name is Kyana, a recent college grad looking to switch lanes to
nursing. I am so grateful I found your youtube channel. A month before
graduation, I was praying about what I wanted to do after graduation and I
got the message I was meant to be a nurse. I graduated college in May with
a degree in political science, I thought I wanted to work in health care
law, but I realized I was meant to be on the floor, face to face helping
people. Like yourself I have a bachelors degree in something else looking
to make the change. I first registered to take my last 3 prereqs and CNA
class but what's after that I have no clue. I found a program at my local
university for students like me looking to get into nursing on the masters
level with a bachelors in something else. I was told by the ADN coordinator
at my local community college, I would not find a job because of my lack
experience that the ADN route would be best. Then I heard that I would not
find a job at the ADN level either because of the hospital systems changing
requirements. My long term goal is to become a nurse practicer, which my
local university offers to RNs with a non-nursing bachelors as well. I
apologize for the long email, but I am sure you can relate when I say, I do
not want to put myself further in debt to pursue my dream. Any advice would
be greatly appreciated.
